Playful dog with bright happy eyes — bully stick session length guide

The general guideline

For most healthy adult dogs, 15 to 30 minutes per session is the sweet spot. This is long enough to provide meaningful dental benefit and mental stimulation, without allowing the dog to consume too much in one sitting from a calorie perspective.

By dog size

Power chewers often finish faster than average. If your dog consistently finishes a 6" stick in under 10 minutes, size up — go Jumbo or Mega Monster.

The most important signal: the stub

Session length is secondary to one non-negotiable rule: remove the chew when it becomes small enough to swallow whole. This is usually when it reaches roughly 2–3 inches. Don't wait for it to disappear — end the session proactively.

How often can dogs have bully sticks?

For healthy adult dogs: 3–5 times per week is a solid routine. Daily is fine for most dogs if you account for the calories in their overall diet. For daily use, rotating with collagen chews every other day gives you better nutritional balance.

Signs you're overdoing it

Tip: Give chews after meals, not before. A satisfied dog chews more slowly and calmly — extending the session and reducing the risk of gulping.
