Puppy playing with owner in park — best natural chews for puppies safe starter guide

When can puppies start chewing?

Most puppies can begin with soft, appropriately-sized natural chews at around 16 weeks (4 months), once their baby teeth are fully in. Between 4–6 months, they're actively teething and chewing needs peak.

Always consult your veterinarian before introducing chews to a puppy, especially for breeds with known dental fragility or puppies under 4 months.

What to look for in a puppy chew

3"–5" Bully Bites are the best starting point for most puppies. The shorter length reduces swallowing risk, and the natural beef flavor is irresistible. Start with one session, supervise closely, and observe before making it a routine.

6" Standard Bully Sticks work well for medium and larger breed puppies at 5–6 months, once they've proven they can chew without gulping.

6" Collagen Sticks are an excellent complement — the denser structure means slower chewing, which is ideal for puppies learning to pace themselves.

What to avoid

Building a positive chew association early pays off long-term. Puppies that learn to enjoy natural chews become adult dogs with healthy chewing habits.
